Title: Turning Passion Into Design: My Journey as a Self-Made Graphic Designer

By Francis Lotodo Losanyana

Design isn't just about making things look good—it's about telling stories, solving problems, and communicating ideas. My journey into graphic design began not in a design school, but from a simple passion to create.

Growing up in Turkana, I was always drawn to visual expression. Whether it was sketching logos or experimenting with colors in Microsoft Paint, I knew I had an eye for design. With limited resources but unlimited curiosity, I taught myself how to use tools like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Canva—turning each project into an opportunity to improve.

Through freelancing and volunteering, including teaching computer packages at TTTI College, I honed not only my technical abilities but also soft skills like communication and teamwork. Graphic design became more than just a skill—it became my personal brand.

What I’ve Learned Along the Way

  • Design is storytelling: Every graphic has a purpose.

  • Consistency matters: Especially in branding.

  • Feedback is fuel: Critiques made me sharper, not weaker.

  • AI is a game-changer: I've embraced AI tools in design and data visualization to stay ahead.

My Vision

I aim to use design to elevate local brands, NGOs, and startups—especially here in Kenya. Design can inspire, educate, and empower. That’s what drives me every day.
